SOUTHINGTON — Yin Wang thinks that manufacturing is on an upswing.

“Our sales have been increasing,” he said. “It’s been good for manufacturers. We sell all over the United States and we see an increasing demand for our machines.”

Perhaps my proudest and most lasting achievement over my 14 years as President of the National Association of Manufacturers is the Dream It. Do It. program that has enabled thousands of people to acquire the skills they need to work in modern manufacturing.

The original idea came appropriately enough from the NAM's think tank, the Manufacturing Institute, which in those days was ably led by my wise and resourceful friend Phyllis Eisen. Initiative seeks to expand state’s pool of ‘dream’ manufacturing jobs

In President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech last month, the President called for laying out a blueprint “for an economy that’s built to last — an economy built on American manufacturing, skills for American workers and a renewal of American values.”

That sounds like something industry, higher education and government should support — but in practical application, how would that work?
